Kopjafák memorial posts were created in 2016 by members of the Christchurch Hungarian Club to mark the 60th anniversary of 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The left hand one (male) was carved by János Vicsai, the right hand (female) one by János Rádi. They were assisted by István Dénes and Viktor Boros. Kopjafák were traditionally used to mark graves in Eastern Hungary and Transylvania.
Historical Note
The Christchurch Hungarian Club was incorporated 5 August 1975. The Clubhouse at 11 Hardy Street was bought by members in June 1975; individuals paid off $50-$300 at a time over several years. Prior to buying the clubhouse they rented various rooms in Central Christchurch for events. 1956 Revolution day is a national holiday in Hungary on the 23 October. In New Zealand it is held on the closest Sunday. Almost of the founding members of the Christchurch Hungarian Club were refugees from 1956.
