Construction of a trestle bridge over the Halswell River: Showing a raft constructed of straw and covered with waterproof canvas

Canterbury Times caption: "The operations of No. 1 Field Company New Zealand Engineers at the Annual Training Camp, Tai Tapu, Canterbury. Territorial Camp: No.1 N.Z. Engineers at Tai Tapu. At the annual camp of the No.1 Field Company, N.Z. Engineers, many of the operations were carried out on a far more extensive scale than anything previously attempted by the company, and ample facilities were obtainable on the ground for bridging operations, the River Halswell being the boundary of the camp, and three distinct types of military bridges were constructed during the period of training. Another important branch of the company's work hitherto in some measure neglected, due to lack of material, was that of demolitions. A fair supply of explosives, however, had been obtained, and good use was made of the material, each member receiving special instruction under Sergeant Petheram. Generally speaking, from an instructional point of view, the camp was the most successful ever held by the corps."
