The Kowai Red Cross Carnival
Canterbury Times caption: "A most successful and enjoyable gathering was held at Kowai Bush in aid of the Red Cross Fund. There was a large attendance during the day, and the efforts of the committee resulted in a very substantial amount being raised in aid of the fund. The photographs show: (1) Red Cross collectors representing Springfield and Kowai Bush. (2) Mr H. Nimmo (Springfield) and the Allies group. (3) Mr R. Mulholland representing Belgian refugees. (4) Red Cross Ambulances, Mr J. Brownley (Springfield), Mr T. Russell (Kowai Bush), and nurses. (5) Mr H. Knight's (Racecourse Hill) car and collectors. (6) Mr and Mrs H. Cassidy and some of the old identities of Springfield. Mr Cassidy, who is seventy-five years of age is handling the reins, and the coach is one of Cobb and Co.s old vehicles that travellers to the West Coast in the earlier days remember so well."
