Historical Note
Burnham Industrial School was situated near the Burnham railway station, eighteen miles from Christchurch. It operated from September 1873 to June 1918 and was one of the three Government industrial schools, the others being at Auckland, Caversham, and near Dunedin. The schools were the responsibility of the Dept. of Justice until they were taken over by the new Dept. of Education in 1880. Industrial schools were set up from the late 1860s to cater for both neglected and delinquent children until they were 15.
