Kete Christchurch
Kete Christchurch was an online resource bringing together records of local events, people, places and events - current and historical. The aim was to gather knowledge held by the community about the Christchurch and Banks Peninsula area by inviting people to share stories, photos, video and audio.
After working with Aotearoa People's Network Kaharoa (APNK) to support other libraries to adopt their local Kete, a pilot project was established by Christchurch City Libraries. Contact was made with a number of organisations and a small collection of material was added. Then in 2010 the Canterbury Earthquake sequence occurred. This saw us collecting stories and images about the earthquakes and related events across the city, and then material documenting the changing city. Kete Christchurch was also used as the home for material contributed to the annual Photo Hunts.
When the Discovery Wall was commissioned in 2019 for the opening of Tūranga, selected Kete Christchurch material was used to populate the Cityscape. Following the launch of the Christchurch City Libraries digital heritage repository, Canterbury Stories, we started to migrate material there as the permanent location. Similarly, the Kete Hurunui collections have also now been transferred to Canterbury Stories as the Hurunui Collection.
Kete Christchurch was supported by the Aotearoa Peoples Network Kaharoa (APNK) and Christchurch City Libraries (CCL). It was discontinued in June 2022.
