Sumner War Memorial plaque
A First World War Memorial plaque, located on the corner of Wakefield Avenue and Nayland Street, Sumner.
Unveiled on 24 March 1923 by the Sumner Borough Council, the Sumner War Memorial plaque, honours the memory of men from the Sumner area who died during the First World War.
The plaque originally consisted of a slab of Bluff granite in a setting of Oamaru stone and had been set into the south-eastern wall of the Sumner Borough Council building, corner of Wakefield Avenue and Nayland Street, Sumner.
The inscription which had been cut into the stone read as follows: —
The Great War. 1914-1919. In Grateful Remembrance of those who, leaving Sumner to take part in the Great War, made the Supreme Sacrifice.
